My Take: The Never Give Up Spirit

Have you watched the La Salle Lady Spikers versus the FEU lady tamaraws? Did you enjoy it? Probably, if you are a Lady spikers fan, you will certainly say yes because your team won. For the side of the Lady Tamaraws, you probably felt bad for the loss of the team. But as a fan, and as an expectator of the match, win or loss for the Lady tamaraws they are still on the run for the top 4. A strong contender- a team on the rise. Why did I say it despite the loss? Let me give you my take.

Excellent Floor Defense

Did you see the digs? The pancake digs that was illustrated perfectly by the Ladies. Agno indeed is an excellent libero. The impossible ball that I thought was already dead but amazingly still playable because of their defense. That’s the best illustration of what floor defense is. And how a great defense can be turned into offense. In the later part of sets 2 and 3. The tams executed a great defense. Honestly, even though they fall short in the contest, they gave a scare to the Lady Spikers.

The Sharp Serves

The lady spikers are the number one best receiving team in the league and the FEU is the best serving team in the league. And they showed it. There serves are very strong that even Lady spikers had a hard time receiving it. There were times that they used their sharp serves to equal the score of lady spikers. The Tamaraws just need to have consistency in their serves and avoid serving errors because it will not help in their final four pursuits.

Varying Attacks and attackers

The Lady Tamaraws have strong attackers namely, Eulalio, Rojas, Basas, Palma and their leading scorer Vargas. Anchored by Sy’s sets. They will come a long way. Points to consider, Eulalio-Sy connection is very important in their offense. It should keep on going. Come up with combnation plays to fools the blockers of the opponent.

The Team Spirit

There number one weapon needed to book a final four berth is there never give up team spirit. They keep on going, help encourage each other and fight as a team. They have this very solid team work that the other teams find hard to emulate.

The verdict

I am still routing for FEU to be in the final 4. No offense meant for other teams. I still believe that they can pull off a win even how hard their opponents in the succeeding games. As they always say “tiwala lang”.

My Take: Ateneo Lady Eagles’ Losing Streak

All has been said and done. Ateneo Lady Eagles tallied themselves a three games losing streak. A two five setter and a demoralizing three sets game, many would probably say “what happened to the Lady Eagles?” They started very strong in the tournament with a 6-0 record then the consecutive losses. They are still the same team who won six games, but what got lost in their games that result a downward spiral not only in their games but also in their morale?

The Fille Cainglet Effect

Fille Canglet is a vital weapon of the Lady Eagles offense. She averages if I’m not mistaken 10 points per game and plus her leadership in the floor. I always see the team go to Cainglet when crunch time and she delivers. Losing her in the offense has an impact to the team. Since Cainglet got injured in the La Salle game, the woes of Ateneo started. I’m not saying she is the sole reason of what is happening to Ateneo but losing a potent weapon is a big deal.
Gretchen Ho and Dzi Gervacio is not Stepping Up

I have watched the games between Ateneo and Adamson and Ateneo versus FEU. What I noticed is that Gretchen Ho and Dzi Gervacio is not firing up. They don’t spike more often than what I am used in seeing. I’m not sure if Jem Ferrer is not distributing the ball well or they just don’t spike that much.

Only Alyssa Valdez stepping up

I bet when you are also a fan of Ateneo Lady Eagles, you would notice this also. It is as if all the kills are given to Valdez. Yes, she is really very good there is no doubt about it. But the girl would get tired as well. When she is frontline, she dominates and even in the back row she still spikes. I really think that she deserves an MVP award for all the works she has done for Ateneo. Alyssa deserves the award.

The other reason that maybe causes them to lose is they don’t receive well and seems to be lost.

I am also a fan of Ateneo Lady Eagles especially Alyssa Valdez. I am saddened about what is happening to the team. Even though they are still top of the standings with 6-3. They still need to compose themselves, the elimination games are not over yet. And their advantage against other teams is very slim. The race to final 4 is getting tighter. Their game against NU is a deciding match. I’m crossing my fingers that they would end their losing streak and start to gain momentum. They are a resilient team they can make it through. They have the best pieces to utilize and they are a contender.

My Take: The Resurging Lady Tamaraws

I am one of the expectators of  UAAP Season 75 Volleyball. I also have a team I am cheering each year which is the FEU Lady Tamaraws. I’ve loved this team for quite sometime now. I have monitored their games each now and then jump at their winnings and grieve when they loses. It is part of my system. When they win, I am so happy working but when they loss, don’t tease me I become a Lion so fast (hehehe), that’s how affected I am.

When UAAP Season 75, I have high hopes for the Lady Tamaraws, I routing for them to be in the Final 4 just like last year. But when the season started and they started with a lost, I was saying it will be fine they will be in the winning record soon. It happened when they defeated University of the Philippines but the next chapters were written differently. It was as if a downward spiral- the Lady Tamaraws is losing their games. The joy of playing and the communication in the court seems lost. Their identity is vague, the team who is very good in floor defense is no where to be found. I got a question that I can’t even answer, “what happened to my team?” Yes, I almost lost my hope for them to be in the final four but continue to support them by watching their games. Then a shocking story came out. The Head Coach of the tams is being replaced. I visited different forums to know more about the new coach which named Coach Kid. Coach Kid is the one who crowned FEU with most numbers of Championships- an impressive resume. It was office day when FEU versus UE was played and read they were back in the winning track after three consecutive loses. A good sign, I was able to watch FEU versus UST. At first, I have my doubts whether they will win it especially in the first set when they committed a lot of errors. Not a good sign, but when the second set underway, and UST was leading and Coach Kid calls a timeout to stop the bleeding, I was impressed because he knows how to motivate them to rise up and pacify themselves. The match continues and the Lady Tams continues to win the match. The Upset as many writers call them. But what I see in the match is the renewed vigor and the superb floor defense that wasn’t present when they lost. Indeed, they are now a new team. The new coach has breathed them life and a positive outlook. Fast forward with Ateneo versus FEU game, everyone is unsure who will win the match. The FEU is on for a winning streak and Ateneo on the other hand is nursing a losing streak. But the match proceeded with FEU winning it in three sets (yes you read it write). It was a first for Ateneo who never lost in three sets. I was watching live streaming in the office and my officemates are laughing at me because I am jumping out of happiness and shock. It was so surreal.

With FEU’s winning streak and renewed confidence I must say that they are a contender for final four. The standings may still be vague at this moment but clouds will unveil it soon. I’m still curious who will end up in the elusive title but my fingers are crossing. Go Lady Tamaraws!
